Why you should throw out your water pik flosser!

Why should you throw out your water pik flosser? The top five reasons to ditch the latest fad in dental hygiene care.

1. Water piks do not massage the gums and can actually cause damage when used too aggressively.

2. Floss is a mechanical removal of debris, water piks "hopefully" flush away debris.

3. Patients who are already sensitive cannot use them.

4. You still have to floss.

5. It is more time consuming and messy.

So who should use a Water Pik?

Although flossing is still the golden ticket as far as cleaning in between your teeth, water piks can sometimes be recommended IN ADDITION to flossing for patients who have braces, bridges, many restorations, or have compromised dexterity that does not allow them to floss properly. The biggest take away is FLOSSING IS STILL necessary! Please do not ditch your white string in your bathroom. It is a love-hate relationship, but your gums and overall health will thank you!
